Lanette Gallagher | Loft 314

Lanette Gallagher | Loft 314
I have always loved color and texture and find inspiration from sometimes the simplest of things, a clear night sky, a shimmering rock, a fuzzy memory. I give a lot of thought to a piece before I lay the first sheet of gold leaf.

So many ideas tumble out that I can't possibly fit them all on a small glass tray so I layer my ideas. Sometimes my ideas are obvious as big splashes of color that float under the surface of the glass but on other pieces you have to look deeper to see through the layers of color that look almost black. When placed in the sun light the black spaces burst with puddles of translucent color.

My latest work is a departure from my earlier more disciplined work. I grew up in Detroit during the 60s and 70s when the city was fueling the American Dream with not only automobiles but music, from Motown to Rock and Roll. My inspiration is drawn from those memories of simpler times and the loss of so many of the great musical icons but also the losses of my hometown Detroit once the motor capital of the nation.
