Russell Grantham | Loft 108
From a childhood in Texas, Oklahoma and Colorado often spent hunting fossils and arrowheads, Avondale Estates artist Russell Grantham got a habit for finding, well, found objects. Combine that with a lifetime working as a newspaper journalist and loving the outdoors and art; the result: the joy of making colorful, highly-textured mixed-media paintings that explore the challenges and charms of our times, and also recycle those found objects.

Russell's works are a mélange of common symbols, subjects and objects like maps, flags, bar codes, nudes, portraits, landscapes, forks, bottle caps, paper, etc., that invite us to see and feel the beauty of our world, but also what can undermine it. The paintings explore a wide range of territory, from images inspired by the recent introduction of body scan machinery at airports, to semi-abstract commentaries on current political issues, to peaceful compositions drawn from backpacking trips.
